Smooth Moves: Essential Tips for a Stress-Free Move

Moving can be one of life's most stressful events. The packing, the organizing, the logistics—it can all feel overwhelming. However, with some careful planning and a few handy tips, you can make your move a smooth and stress-free experience. Whether you're moving across town or across the country, these tips will help you stay organized and sane throughout the process.

  1. Start Early: Procrastination is your worst enemy when it comes to moving. Start planning and packing as soon as you know you'll be moving. Create a timeline for your move and stick to it. This will help you avoid last-minute stress and ensure everything gets done on time.

  2. Declutter Before You Pack: Moving is the perfect opportunity to declutter and get rid of items you no longer need or use. Go through your belongings and donate, sell, or toss anything you haven't used in the past year. Not only will this make packing easier, but it will also save you time and money on moving expenses.

  3. Label Everything: Invest in quality moving boxes and label them clearly with the contents and the room they belong in. This will make unpacking much easier and help you keep track of your belongings during the move. For my own personal recent move, we got boxes from our local Wal-Mart and the cohesiveness in three size options helped a lot with stacking boxes for optimal space in our moving truck.

  4. Pack Strategically: Pack items you won't need right away first, such as out-of-season clothing and decorations, as well as family heirlooms or keepsake sentimental items. Leave essentials like toiletries, a change of clothes, and important documents for last, and pack them in a clearly marked box or suitcase that you'll keep with you during the move. If you’re moving within a short distance, such as a different side of town, this can be a little easier to navigate getting what you need when you need it, but if you’re going further away (such as out of state, like I did this year), you might need to prepare yourself to live out of a suitcase for the last week or two, just so you know where your daily essentials are.

  5. Take Inventory: Create an inventory of all your belongings before you start packing. This will help you keep track of everything and ensure nothing gets lost or left behind during the move. Consider taking photos of valuable items for insurance purposes. Personally, I’m a huge book collector. Since I have a collection of over 500 books I was moving, I wanted to make sure these were packed carefully. I numbered my boxes 1-20, for example, and when it came time to unpack, my first goal was to make sure I had all 20 boxes in place. This was the easiest thing to pack and unpack through my entire move! Try this for collections, holiday decorations, or simply number the boxes by room. I even used special color markers to label boxes that had fragile or important boxes to help set them apart from the sea of sameness.

  6. Hire Professional Movers (optional): While it may be tempting to save money by doing it yourself, hiring professional movers can save you a lot of time and hassle in the long run. Do your research and choose a reputable moving company with positive reviews and insurance coverage. For my most recent move, we had packed and moved everything ourselves, but by the time we arrived at our new home, we were downright exhausted. We ended up hiring movers for two hours just to help us unload our truck so we could return it in time, and it helped us so much, we wished we had hired someone to help in the first place.

  7. Notify Important Parties: Don't forget to notify important parties of your move, such as your utility companies, landlord or property manager, and the post office. This will ensure a smooth transition and prevent any disruptions to your services. You’ll need to update your drivers license or state ID with your new address change, so be mindful that you may need to schedule an appointment for this. I had to wait two weeks just to get my appointment to update my drivers license and voters registration card. We moved during an election year, so it was important to me to ensure I had updated what I needed to make sure I could vote in the fall.

  8. Pack an Essentials Box: Pack a box with all the essentials you'll need for the first few days in your new home, such as toiletries, a change of clothes, snacks, and basic cleaning supplies. This will save you from having to dig through boxes to find what you need when you first arrive. It might also save you a couple trips to the store to simply buy a new one, too.

  9. Stay Organized: Keep important documents, such as your lease or mortgage paperwork, moving contracts, and contact information for the moving company, in a safe and easily accessible place. This will help you stay organized throughout the moving process. For moving out of state, we had to not only change our identification cards but also our banks, due to not having local branches, and many other little reasons that we needed proof of residency. I had placed all our passports in a special box and we kept our other paperwork in a safe place so that we would have that needed paperwork and identification whenever we needed it.

  10. Take Care of Yourself: Moving can be physically and emotionally exhausting, so don't forget to take care of yourself throughout the process. Take breaks when you need them, stay hydrated, and don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

By following these tips, you can take some of the stress out of the moving process and ensure a smooth transition to your new home. Remember to stay organized, start early, and take care of yourself along the way. Happy moving!
